お隣さんの息子さん（５歳）が英会話スクールに通うことになったようです。

B: Oh, is he? Which school?

A: The XX school.

B: Near YY station?

A: Yes, that school doesn't advertise for students often,
　　and I've heard this time it has been done for the first
　　time in three years.

B: Oh, really? Have you taught your son some English
　　at home?

A: Not really. But my husband often goes on business
　　trips to America, that's why my son is really
　　interested in English. But I wasn't sure if it was
　　just a passing whim or not, so I didn't do anything
　　about lessons. Now, he's been longing for lessons
　　for a year, I finally decided to enroll him at
　　a language school.

B: That's great! He must be excited!

B: あ、YY駅前の？

A: そうやねん。あの学校ってしょっちゅう募集ないねんて。今回の募集も

B: へぇ～ほんまにぃ？　今まで家で英語教えたりしてたん？

A: たいして。でも、主人が出張でしょっちゅうアメリカに行くから
　 英語にはすんごい興味もってやんねんやんかぁ。
　 でも、子どもの気まぐれかもしれんから、と思って、そのまま放っててん。
　 で、１年間ずっと習いたい習いたいって言い続けたから、ついに
　　決めてんよ。

B: それはそれは。さぞ喜んでやるやろぉ～

　　相手の言ったことに対する驚きや信じられない気持ちを表して
　　「まさか！」を表すこともあります。この場合の発音は上がり調子で。

　　　A: 前大統領は先週亡くなりましたよ。
　　　B: まさか！

■　passing whim ふとした気まぐれ

　　passing　は「つかの間の、思いつきの」という意味の形容詞で
　　whim は「気まぐれ、移り気、出来心」という意味の名詞です。
