A: The printer gave up the ghost.

B: Gee! What did you do to it?

A: I have no idea. I was making a copy, and out of
　　the blue it stopped. I turned it off, waited for a while
　　and then turned it on again.But it still didn't work.
　　This stupid printer! I need to copy a lot of articles,
　　and I could only finish one page.

B: That's too bad. You have no choice but to get in touch
　　with the service center.

A: All right then.

■　give up the ghost　　（機械が）動かなくなる、いかれる

　このイディオムは、機械が動かなくなった状態を、ちょっとユーモラスに
　表現するのに使ったりします。

　《例文》
　　My car finally gave up the ghost.
　　（私の車がとうとうお陀仏になった）
　
　
　また、人が主語になると、「（うまくいかないと思い何かをするのを）あきらめ
る」とか「亡くなる」の意味になります。

■　out of the blue　　　　とつぜん、だしぬけに

　思いもよらなかった何かが突然起こるときに使う表現です。
　
　out of a clear blue sky と言うこともあります。
　「青空から思いもよらぬものが落ちてくる」という感じですね。

　《例文》
　　A: I'd like you to give a speech.
　　B: What! Now? You shouldn't ask people to do that
　　　　out of the blue.
　　
　　A: スピーチをしてもらえないでしょうか。
　　B: えっ、今？　だしぬけにスピーチしろだなんて
　　　　人に頼むもんじゃないよ。

　　（このチャンスはまったく予想していなかった。とても運がよかったよ）

■　stupid 　　　　　むかつく、いまいましい

　ダイアローグからもわかるように、腹立たしさやいらだちを表します。
　
　男性なら　damn を使ってもいいですが、女性の場合は、stupid　
　あたりにしておきましょう。

　　This stupid door won't open.
　　（このむかつくドア、どうしても開かないよ）

■　have no choice but to　　～するより仕方がない

　choice は「選択の自由、選択権」という意味の名詞です。
　to 以下のことをする以外に、選択の自由がないので、have no choice
　となります。
　
　選択の自由がある場合は、have a choice
　「選ぶ、選択する」と自動詞で使いたい場合は、make a choice
　となります。

　《例文》
　　I had no choice but to leave my house.
　　（家を出るよりほかにどうしようもなかった）
　　
　　We have no choice but to use pesticides.
　　（我々は殺虫剤を使わないわけにはいかない）

　　Given the circumstances, we had no choice but to
　　accept the offer.
　　（その状況では、申し出を受け入れるしかなかった）

　　For dinner you have the choice of fish or meat.
　　（夕食には魚か肉か（どちらか）選べます）

　　We have a difficult choice to make.
　　（難しい選択をしなくてはならない）
